Manuel

Manuel, J. C., Sunseri, M. A., Olson, R., & Scolari, M. (2007). A diagnostic approach to increase reusable dinnerware selection in a cafeteria. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 40(2), 301.

Results: In the survey, the most common reasons for using disposable items was the ability for students to take their food and drinks out of the cafeteria, and less effort was needed to pick disposable items. Arrangement changes produced increased use of reusables. Combining with posters did not increase the use of reusable items much more than arrangement alone, and neither did employee encouragement. A combination of arrangement, employee involvement and personal prompts produced the highest increase.

Relevance to our question: The study suggests using a survey to figure out the reasons for behavior could be useful in coming up with plans to address issues. Ease of behavior change seems to be an important factor, too. Simply arranging things to make more sustainable options obvious and easier increased the use of reusable cups.

Sociology is the study of human interaction.  Through a better understanding of sociology, we can analyze current library café waste patterns and use that knowledge to suggest and implement new behaviors.  Sociology utilizes methods such as surveying and creating commitment plans for students to follow.  We found the study by Manuel, Olson, and Scolari from 2007 to be helpful in displaying examples of tools we could use.
